The Arabian horse type remained unchanged from around 1800 B.C. to the 1900s A.D. For the first three millennia of its existence, the Arabian was a war horse, and this dictated the type. German commanders after several failed attempts to take Bastogne decided to strike at what appeared to be the weakest point in the American defensive line. It was a part of the front where only two companies of the 101st Airborne, no more than 300 men, held a line that stretched over a mile and a half around the northeastern part of Bastogne near the small village of Foy. Captain Richard “Dick” Winters commanded those 300 men of the 101st which were positioned to take a direct hit from the German advance. Soon masses German tanks and infantry opened a crack in Bastogne’s outer defenses in an all-out attack. The outnumbered soldiers fought desperately against the oncoming flood of German tanks and panzer grenadiers. Allied troops inside Bastogne’s inner defense would again mount another desperate counter-attack pushing the Germans back with heavy losses. It is a story that legends are made of, and a part of American history that should never be forgotten. Great explorers lost at sea; ships trapped in ice, frozen in time; gifts from the Queen of England and a priceless desk that is used to this day by American presidents. The Dafuskie Marsh Tacky Society , located in Bluffton, SC, was formed to preserve the breed which was in danger of disappearing. They have multiple horses at the races today including a dark blue roan or grulla stallion with zebra striping from his hocks to his dark lower legs and a dark dorsal stripe down his smokey blue hide. His mane is thick and dark and his mouth is small. He looks more Mustang than Marsh Tacky and is gorgeous to look at, like a plush stuffed animal they sell at Disneyland. One of the oldest existing breeds in the world, the Akhal-Teke hails from the country of Turkmenistan and even serves as the nation’s symbol. These horses may as well be the definition of beauty, with the distinctive metallic coat and sparse mane and tail. They are also known for the speed, endurance and intelligence, enabling them to be fantastic sport horses. Teke horses are usually used in dressage, show jumping, racing and endurance riding. With such a distinctive look, these horses are usually very easy to spot in a crowd. As hard as it might be to believe, the breed nearly became extinct on several occasions over time. Due to fuel rationing during World War II the Freisian’s farm and carriage use was revived, saving the breed long enough for both its population and popularity to rebound. Due to the fuel shortages, Dutch farmers turned to horses for transportation and fieldwork. The Friesian is one of the best carriage horses in the world. Due to its flashy appearance, the Friesian has become popular in the film industry. The breed owes much of its current popularity to the appearance of the Friesian stallion Othello in the 1985 film, Ladyhawke, which ignited a worldwide interest in these horses.
Canadian actor and forever-Captain Kirk, William Shatner, has owned and bred horses at the Belle Reve Farm for decades in Versailles near Louisville and Lexington; and in California. He recently built a large home in the area and his wife Elizabeth pursues her professional photography and exquisite digital paintings as well as her own line of fine wines there. Shatner’s former wife, Marcy Lafferty, heads nearby Poser Farm. Li Gonglin was a Chinese painter of horses who was active in the 12th century during the Northern Song dynasty. Trained as a civil servant, and also active as an archaeologist, Li Gonglin was a man of many talents. This picture is apparently a re-working of an 8th century original and is therefore a very ancient image indeed. The Chinese horses look a little rounder and shorter than European paintings of the same era. Horses, mules and donkeys are driven in harness in many different ways. For working purposes, they can pull a plow or other farm equipment designed to be pulled by animals. In many parts of the world they still pull wagons for basic hauling and transportation. They may draw carriages at ceremonies, in parades or for tourist rides. Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) Sir Alfred James Munnings, was known as one of England’s finest painters of horses, and his distinguished artistic career was rewarded with a knighthood and a spell as president of London’s Royal Academy of Art. He painted numerous well-known pictures in his long career, many of which can be seen hanging at his former home, Castle House in Dedham, Essex. Very solid and sturdy cue, powerful consistent performance every shot. Excellent balance and feel all round and very little if any throw when using side. Stun and screw shots are effortless, highly recommended. Many of Japan’s greatest artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Ando Hiroshige, and others have made dramatic paintings and ukiyo-e woodcuts of horses in battle, horses being ridden by nobility and scholars, horses toiling in an ancient Japanese village, and more. This is a wonderful source with hundreds of dog and puppy names. It includes suggestions for big dogs, small dogs, hunting dogs, all coat colors, and specific breeds. This person is just saying stuff we all have known for years! Arabians are intelligent, quick to learn with great senses of humor and a willingness to please that is equal to no other breed! They can be as gentle and as quiet as any kid’s pony yet have the energy, grace and talent to jump fences, chase cows, and do dressage.
One of the greatest endurance horses of all time, Shahzada, was a pure Colonial. Shahzada was the winner of 100, 300, and 500 Mile Endurance tests in England, as well as flat races against Thoroughbreds, prior to his exportation to Australia. Pure Colonial breeder Les Ellery of Cudglebar Stud (founded in 1930) decades ago once rode a mare by Jedran (by Prince Nejd by Shahzada) to catch an unhandled mare. They had to run the unhandled mare until she was exhausted, and then immediately had to run down a Thoroughbred until she was exhausted and lay down. In those days when large outback Australian properties had numerous unhandled horses, this was the only method of catching a horse. The Jedran mare never had a whip or spur on her. She repeatedly was used to drive mobs of horses to the Orange sales from Blayney in western N.S.W. The distance of 25 miles (40 km) was ridden at the gallop, as the horses were unhandled and from various properties. Les Ellery also raced Arabians against Thoroughbreds in picnic races, and at one time raced a Shahzada grand-daughter who was so fast that he had to agree to give a half-furlong start to the rest of the field before she was allowed to start. For sure, the United States is a tough nut to crack for horse sports, but with a man like Christophe leading the charge, this event will continue to bring more people to see the annual Longines Masters of New York. They can come watch the horses but also take the time to discover nearby New York City, one of the best-known iconic cities in the world. Now you can’t beat that combination. Soundness is something that you need to take into consideration when purchasing a horse off the racetrack. Racing can be hard on a horses body, depending on how long they raced, it can have lasting wear and tear. Depending on the type of wear and tear, it may or may not affect the horse’s ability to stay sound in the future. Since the beginning of recorded history, horse racing was an organized sport for all major civilizations around the globe. The ancient Greek Olympics had events for both chariot and mounted horse racing. Then the Romans embraced the sport. In the Roman Empire, chariot and mounted horse racing were major industries with imported bloodlines, breeding programs, exhaustive training routines, and all the accoutrements of organized wagering like bookmakers, horse-racing tracks, scandals, hot tips, and most of all, excitement. The decline of the Roman Empire also saw a decline in organized public racing until well into more modern times.
